A business card the phone understands

Scanning this saves the contact as a real entry — name, phone, email, website — rather than a photo of a card nobody can search later.

Scan it and your phone offers to save the contact. Every field you typed above lands in the phone's address book, not in a note.

What vCard buys you over a paper card

A paper card becomes a photo in the camera roll, unsearchable and easy to lose. A vCard code becomes a contact entry with a name you can search, a number you can call with one tap, and an address you can hand to a phone's dialer. At events and trade shows that is the difference between a card you keep and a card you meant to keep.

It also survives a change of job. The paper card prints one employer; the code points at whatever the page behind it says — though unlike a short link, a vCard code cannot be restyled after printing. The name and number inside it are fixed.

Which fields matter

1

Name and phone are the load-bearing pair

Almost every scanning app will offer to save on name plus phone alone. If a guest scans at an event and decides to save, those two decide whether it works.

2

Email is what gets typed manually later

Longer than a phone number and easier to get wrong when read off a card. Including it means it is already correct in the saved entry.

3

Website adds the one thing a card cannot

A link that opens your portfolio or booking page. Note that it cannot be changed after printing without reprinting the code.

4

Organization and title are optional but useful

They end up in the contact's company and job fields, which is what makes a saved contact findable six months later.

How to print one

The layout that works is a standard business card with the code printed at 2.5 to 3 cm in a corner, plus your name and details as normal readable text. The code replaces the "type my email" line, not the card.

On a 85 × 55 mm card, a 25 mm code in the bottom-right with a clear margin is the reliable arrangement. Avoid printing it over a busy background image — module edges need a quiet zone around them. If you laminate, print at 3 cm or larger; gloss plus small codes is where most failures come from.

The contact details are stored in the code itself. Anyone who photographs it gets the name and number. That is fine for a business card — the details are printed on the card anyway — but do not put a personal mobile number on a code you hand to strangers if you would not put it in print.

What it is not

This is a vCard, which is a contact. It is not a WiFi code, not a payment code, and not a link that can be updated later. If you need something that redirects somewhere new each month, print a code pointing at your own page and change the page instead.

vCard QR code questions

Will scanning save the contact automatically?

iPhone shows a banner asking you to confirm. Android asks whether to add the contact. Neither saves silently — the phone always asks first.

How big does the code need to be on a business card?

25 to 30 mm on an 85 × 55 mm card works reliably. Below 20 mm, test on the actual printed card — paper texture and ink spread cost more tolerance than people expect.

Can I update the details after printing?

No. A vCard code carries the contact data itself, so changing a phone number means a new code and a reprint. If the details change often, print a code pointing at your page instead.

Does it work in Outlook and Google Contacts?

The vCard format is a standard both read. Scanning a vCard from a desktop camera is rare, but a phone scanning a card on a desk and emailing the contact to yourself works fine.

Is the contact data uploaded anywhere?

No. The card is assembled and encoded in your browser. Close the tab and the page no longer holds the details.
